Irishman of the Year
Past President Robert McConville
Robert McConville, past president of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters
Emerald Society, 24 year member and Ex-Captain of the Selden Fire Department, is
our Irishman of the year. Robert is currently President of the Southern New York
Volunteer Firemen's Association. He is a 20 year member of F.A.S.N.Y.'s EMS
Committee and F.A.S.N.Y.'s Sectional Communications Committee.
Bob joined the Selden Fire Department in 1982 after
serving 14 years in the St. James Fire Department. In Selden, Bob was Captain of
Dixon Engine Company No. 3, Department Treasurer and is currently serving as
Department Secretary. He has been the Treasurer of Company 3 for the past 15
years. An EMT for 25 years, Bob has served on Suffolk County REMSCO and REMAC
Committees and for the past 3 years Bob has been an active member of the Suffolk
County Recruitment and Retention Committee. He is a Past President of the
Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen's Association and Past President of the
Brookhaven Town Drill Team Captain's Association. He is currently a Suffolk
County Drill Team Official, Secretary of the Suffolk County Drill Officials
Association and Secretary-Treasurer of the Nassau-Suffolk Drill Officials
Association. Bob is also a member of the Selden Fire Department's "Slowpokes"
Drill Team and was Captain of the team for 5 years.
Bob was President of the Suffolk County Volunteer
Firefighters Emerald Society from 1999-2000 and was instrumental in the Society
joining the Grand Council of Emerald Societies, which represents all the Emerald
Societies in and around the New York metropolitan area. Through Bob's efforts,
Suffolk County has become a strong voice among these 23 societies. Bob has been
a member of the Grand Council since 1996 and has been a Council Trustee since
2000.
Bob is married to his lovely wife Virginia and has
worked for the Suffolk County Police Department since 1992.
The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Emerald
Society feels that Past President Robert McConville has earned the honor of
being our 2006 Irishman of the Year by virtue of his dedication to the fire
service and the community at large.
